Pipeline Run

Every Christmas Jon would travel to the North Shore of Oahu and stay with his friend Michael Wichman. Michael had a place at Kawela Bay which is now near the Turtle Bay Hilton. Back then Kawela Bay was a little commune with a perfect left point. There, Jon met Buddy Dumphy who used to shape for Surf Line Hawaii. Jon would sit for hours trying to decipher Buddy's stories recited in the thickest pigeon known to man. Buddy spoke about the good old days. A few years later Kawela Bay was hit with a wrecking ball, developed, and buddy was killed in a tragic car accident. That moment with Buddy in 1981 was "a good old day". The knowledge Buddy gave to Jon about wave selection, surfboard design and knowing one's limit probably saved his life. This photo was taken a few years later by world renowned surfer and Surfing Magazine photographer Rob Gilley. LaLa running across a playful Pipeline day, Dec 1983.
