Haleiwa Hawaii

Contrary to popular opinion Jon is no stranger to big waves. Before the 90's longboard resurgence, Jon was charging huge waves from San Diego's Blacks Beach to The Canyon near Morro Bay and as far up as San Fransisco's Ocean Beach. Fresh off the plane, Jon got a welcome snake from surf legend Aaron Napoleon. After this wave Aaron asked Jon if he was OK. Years before these photos were taken, Jon Paddled out at Oahu's Sunset Beach when he was only 17. The waves jumped from 8 feet to 20 feet in 1/2 hour. Jon was caught inside on his first sunset bomber .While under water Jon looked up to the surface on a sunny day and saw black. That was the closest he has ever come to death. Jon learned first hand to respect Oahu's North Shore. On this particular day Jon had already paid some dues in Hawaiian juice and had some confidence underneath his belt. Rob Gilley snapped these photos from the beach at Haleiwa in 1983. After a couple of attempts Jon finally got a wave to himself and what a wave it was.
